Basic River Skills Below are the skills needed to complete the River paddling section of the RRRC '06. ACA Basic River instructors can teach these skills to you. These are minimum skills and each participant should train appropriately to compete in the RRRC '06. The Clear Fork of the Brazos river can be a moving water source in the spring and rainy season. Rescue: Self rescue; Self Rescue Swimming in Current; Rescue Priorities; Control Capsize; How to empty a kayak; Kayak over Kayak Rescues; Deep Water Exits and Rescues Strokes: Forward; Back; Draw; Sweep; Reverse Sweep; Rudder Maneuvers: Spins, boat pivots in place; Abeams, boat moves sideways without headway; Forward, boat goes forward in a reasonable straight line; Stopping, boat stops within a reasonable distance River Reading and Paddling: Upstream vs. Downstream V's; Rocks; Eddies; Ledges; Hydraulics; Strainers; Horizon Line; Water Color; Water Sounds; River Bends River Running; Running drops; Scouting; Lead and Sweep; River Signals River Skills, Maneuvers: Boat Leans; Forward Ferries; Eddy Turns; Peel-Outs Dealing with Hazards: Running Aground; Broaching (lean into obstacle); Pins and Entrapments; Strainers; Hydraulics |
